When you're brand new to dance, people often recommend starting with ballet. They claim that ballet will give you a good dance foundation that you can build on as you continue to progress as a dancer. This is true. However, it does not mean that taking ballet lessons first is your only option. If you don't find ballet exciting or appealing, then you may want to look into another style of dance. Here are some other dance styles that are suitable for beginners to learn.

Theatrical Dance

Do you want to be on stage, perhaps in a musical or play? Many of these performances include some or a lot of dance. You don't generally need to be a trained ballet dancer to do theatrical dance, but you do need a good sense of rhythm, flexibility, and interpretive movement. Theatrical dance classes can teach you these basics. You'll learn a wide range of different movements and also how to pair them with music, speech, and moods. In some dance classes, you may rehearse classic routines from noted musicals like Cats or Jersey Boys. In other classes, you may create dance routines for new plays and performances. Having taken theatrical dance classes will help you earn roles in stage productions.

Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dancing is so rich in culture and tradition. From the Waltz to the Foxtrot, these dances are so iconic. Ballroom dancing is physically demanding to a certain degree, but it does not require more flexibility or strength than the average person has. So, if you want a style of dance that feels more like fun and less like a workout, you may want to take some ballroom dancing classes. Just be forewarned: most of these are partner dances. So, if you don't register for dance classes with a partner, you will be assigned one.

Modern Dance

Modern dance tends to combine elements from gymnastics and tumbling with elements from hip-hop and stage dance. It's a broad style of dance that tends to be energetic, fun, and body-positive. It can be very physically demanding, but not in such a structured way as ballet. Modern dance is a good option if you're looking for dance classes that really encourage you to be unique, express yourself as an individual, and strut your energy.

Ballet classes are a good place to start, but not the only place to start. Consider these other options, too.
