If you are new to e-cigarettes and vaping, your visit to an E-cig shop may seem overwhelming. The staff at e-cig shops are generally very helpful in regards to helping you choose the best flavored vape juice or advising you on which nicotine level may be the best suited for the level of nicotine you are used to, when smoking cigarettes. However, the overall experience can be intimidating, especially when trying to decide which is best suited for your needs-e-cigarettes or vaporizers. To help lower your anxiety when choosing, here are the similarities and differences between e-cigarettes and vaporizers (vapes).

E-Cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are made to have the same feel and look as a traditional cigarette, but the primary difference is that an e-cigarette is battery-powered. They use a cartridge for oil with different nicotine levels. When you inhale, the heating element is activated, which allows you to draw in the vapor. This is typically the best option for those who want a smoking cessation aid that looks and feels like a traditional cigarette.

Vaporizers

Vaporizers (vapes) are bulkier and aren't designed to resemble the look or feel of a traditional cigarette. Vaporizers have cartomizers (similar to the atomizer) which hold the e-liquid (known as juice or oil). The e-liquid is available in a wide variety of flavors and nicotine levels.

Similarities Between E-Cigs and Vapes

Both e-cigarettes and vaporizers can be used to satisfy cravings that a cigarette smoker experiences. They both produce an odorless water vapor instead of smoke, so there is no odor of smoke on your body or clothing. Other similarities include:

  • Both vapes and e-cigs have a variety of flavor choices, but e-cigs have a more limited option and they are pre-packaged, so, when visiting the e-cig shop, you would ask for an e-cig according to the nicotine level and flavor that you want.
  • Both are rechargeable using a USB or wall charger (some e-cigs aren't rechargeable)
  • Neither produces secondhand smoke; they both release vapor clouds instead of smoke
  • Both have a throat hit, which is similar to the feeling of inhaling when smoking a traditional cigarette
  • Neither e-cigs nor vapes contain tobacco

Differences Between E-Cigs and Vapes

The primary difference between e-cigs and vapes is that there are significantly more flavors, cloud production and throat hit options with a vaporizer. Other differences include:

  • E-cigarettes have pre-filled cartridges, so the flavor level cannot be changed, whereas with vaporizers the flavor can be easily manipulated for a stronger or more mild flavor
  • The battery life for e-cigs is limited because of their size, but vape batteries can typically last all day
  • Vapes can be refilled with the e-liquid of your choice and you can switch flavors whenever you choose, but e-cigs require a new cartridge when they are emptied or if you want to change flavors.

The best way to determine which option is best suited for your specific needs are to visit a local e-cig shop and talk with the staff. There are several e-cig shop services available online, but if you are new to using e-cigarettes or vaporizers, it's best to visit a shop in person, at least for your initial exposure to the products.
